Use of Bath Salts Continues to Increase in Gwinnett

Gwinnett police are stepping up efforts to find the suppliers of this dangerous drug and increasing its training to deal with suspects, many of whom exhibit superhuman strength.

Reports of people allegedly under the influence of bath salts continue to make headlines.   Most recently, Gwinnett County Police were called to the scene of a Duluth man who was acting "bizarre" and ate his own feces.   That story came just days after news broke out about an Alpharetta man, also allegedly high on bath salts, was tasered fourteen times when police found him running rampant around a Norcross-area driving range. Bath Salts Cause Duluth Man to Eat Own Feces

Gwinnett Police arrested Matthew Hammond, 21, in a bizarre incident July 3.

Gwinnett County Police arrested Mathew Hammond, 21, who acted violently and apparently ate his own feces while allegedly under the influence of bath salts during an incident in Duluth, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday. Police officers were called to a residence in the 2100 block of Worrall Hill Drive around 4 p.m. July 3 in response to a report from a woman who informed police that Hammond, her son, was "walking around out of his mind, armed with a knife," according to the police incident report cited in the AJC article. He apparently dropped the knife before police arrived. Hammond reportedly ran toward the police car and chased after it when the officer pulled away. See Video of Man High on Bath Salts

Gwinnett County Police recorded the man's erratic behavior on camera while he was at a Norcross-area driving range.

Gwinnett County Police videotaped the erratic behavior of Karl Laventure, an Alpharetta man who admitted to being high on bath salts and marijuana. He was tasered 14 times, had threatened to eat people and exhibited superhuman strength, according to police reports obtained by Patch. The incident occured around 10 a.m. June 14 at Atlanta Golf Center, located off Beaver Ruin Road in unincorporated Norcross. Click here for the full story. Updated, 7:30 p.m. Click here to watch the video of the man's arrest. --- A man high on what is suspected to be "bath salts" was tasered 14 times, threatened to eat people's faces and exhibited superhuman strength in a June 14th incident at the Atlanta Golf Center in unincorporated Norcross. Officers who were first on the scene at the 1100 Beaver Ruin Road establishment around 10:30 a.m. said Alpharetta resident Karl Laventure came running at them out of the woodline "in a full sprint," according to police reports obtained by Patch.
