Here's what's happening in Norcross this weekend.
Kick off the weekend by helping our public schools. The Norcross Cluster Schools Partnership (NCSP) is holding its annual fundraiser on Friday to support area public school teachers, students and educational activities. Event details are online at www.norcrosscsp.org. Or if you want to be entertained, see Of Mice and Men at the Lionheart Theatre Friday though Sunday. On Saturday night, there is a fundraiser for Aimee Copeland, the 24-year-old Snellville resident who lost her limbs from flesh-eating bacteria after a zip-line accident. 'Spider-Man' reboots with a new cast and director -- but is it really amazing?
"The Amazing Spider-Man" swung into theaters Tuesday, rebooting the 10-year-old franchise after the debacle that was "Spider-Man 3." But can the new cast and new director (the fittingly named Marc Webb) deliver where Sam Raimi and Toby Maguire faltered? The short answer is: Yes. "The Amazing Spider-Man" is a far better film than Raimi's self-indulgent, jokey and overlong "Spider-Man 3;" it is, in fact, the best film of the franchise. And British actor Andrew Garfield (doing a flawless American accent) is a better Spider-Man than Maguire -- leaner, more intense and less self-pitying. That's not to say the film is without flaws; one subplot feels unfinished, and the villain is definitely a minor-leaguer in Spidey's baddie bullpen. But these …
At an open house Saturday night, Norcross residents were invited to The Nest to try hands-on painting, paper mache and sculpture. If you missed it, you can still sign up for art workshops at The Nest.
Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn to paint. Or you’d like to make a piñata for your child’s birthday party, but you’re intimidated by paper mache. The Nest invited the public in Saturday night to its Summerfest see that art is much easier than you think. At the open house, stations were set up for people to try hands-on projects such as sculpture or painting. “We really want people to come in and get a feel for what it’s like to do these workshops,” said Lori Sturgess, director of The Nest, “just to learn a new craft or learn something new.” The Nest opened last year as a place for artists to work and display their art, as well for Norcross residents to experience art – by browsing the gallery, purchasing linen art for sale or taking …
This is last weekend for the Cuban artists' exhibition, but watch out for the gallery's next show June 7.
Norcross' Vargas & Harbin Studio Gallery is saying goodbye to its current exhibit, "Come Together," but will have new artwork for its upcoming show shortly after. With the last showing this Sunday, "Come Together" features work from nine artists who went to art school together 30 years ago in Havanna, Cuba. The artists decided to reunite after being separated for so long and collaborate on an exhibition. "We bring all the passion we have as Cubans, and we try to show the meaning of Latin American art, especially Cuba," said Reinaldo Vargas, the curator for "Come Together" and the owner of the downtown gallery. While guests can check out the Cuban artwork Friday through Sunday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., come back Thursday to check out the …

Community members browsed the gallery filled with art from nine Cuban artists.
On Saturday in an opening wine reception, Vargas & Harbin Studio Gallery debuted its latest exhibition, "Come Together," featuring Cuban artists who have a outstanding history together. Nine prominent artists who once hailed from Havanna, Cuba, have reunited for the first time after thirty years to put together a collection celebrating their roots. The nine Cubans were students at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Art, the country's oldest and most prestigious arts school. "It's amazing because after all those years, we notice how we change," said Reinaldo Vargas, co-owner of the gallery. Vargas also curated the exhibition and featured many of his own mixed-media works. Some of the other artists include: "We bring all the passion we have …

My sister, Landa, is my best friend. She is a Godly woman and has raised an amazing family along with her husband. I used to copy everything she did if I could. If we all went to a restaurant I would wait to order until she did and I would order the exact same thing. I even followed her to the same college. She lives way up in Virginia now, but I visit her as often as I can and we talk all the …   more ›
