Greater Atlanta Christian triumphs over the Roswell school at Saturday's match.
Greater Atlanta Christian defeated Blessed Trinity 1-0 in the AA State Championship for girls soccer last Saturday, making it the first state title win in GAC girls soccer history. Playing on the Titans' turf in Roswell, the Lady Spartans scored early in the game. Freshman Danielle Marcano headed the ball on an assist from junior Kayla Puzas only six minutes in, according to a press release. Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth White helped defend her post so that the Titans remained scoreless. The AA win is the first state title in Lady Spartan history. The U17 team marks the third U.S. national team for the Norcross High basketball player.
Norcross High basketball player Diamond DeShields will be playing in the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship this summer, according to ESPN. The U17 team is the third U.S. National team for DeShields, a junior at Norcross. The offense guard also won gold medals with U.S. teams for the U19 world championship team in 2011 and the U18 Americas championship team in 2010. Wesley McDowell is headed to the championships in California this summer.
A local student will be competing this summer at the 2012 USA Fencing National Championships, a division of the U.S. Olympic games. Welsey McDowell, a sabre fencer and a rising sophomore at Greater Atlanta Christian Schools, will participate in three events (age divisions Y14, U16 and U19) in the tournament, which will take place from June 29 to July 8 in Anaheim, Calif. The GAC student from Stone Mountain has been a fencer for four years. His most recent competition was in April at Kennesaw Mountain Regional High School, where he participated in the Peach State Open ROC and the Georgia Games 2012 Fencing Championships. Both the girls and boys will head to the state AA semifinals this week.
After two successful wins in the quarterfinals this past weekend, Greater Atlanta Christian Schools' girls and boys varsity soccer teams are headed to the state AA semifinals. According to the GAC website, the boys team defeated North Oconee High School 2-1 on Friday, May 11, and the girls beat Dawson County High School 7-0 the following Saturday. While both games took place on their opponents' turf, the upcoming games will be on Spartan soil. The GAC boys will play Westminister High School at 7:30 p.m. this Tuesday, May 15, and the girls will play Buford High School at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Admission is $7. Greater Atlanta Christian Schools' had a double victory this past week when the girls' track and golf teams both won State titles. On Saturday, the Lady Spartans won the State AA Championship in Albany with an amazing team effort, according to a statement from the school. "With only 0.25 points in the field events, our girls went from 'worst to first' by dominating the sprint events to capture the title in a close win over Region 6AA rivals Decatur [High School], Blessed Trinity [Catholic High School] and Westminster [Schools]," says the press release. Taking place at the Blue Devils stadium, the 9th graders begin their game at 6 p.m. and the JV/Varisty will follow at 7 p.m. Tickets go for $10, which includes entrance to the game, a meal at the concession stand and a chance at raffle prizes. The Norcross High Touchdown Club, the booster club for NHS football, is also asking for new members. The Norcross High basketball player signs to the Tar Heels last Saturday.
Norcross High basketball player Diamond DeShields committed to the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday, according to ESPN. DeShields is the No. 3 propsect in the class of 2013, and is the Tar Heels' highest-ranked junior commitment to date, according to the article. The offense guard helped the Lady Blue Devils score a spot in this year's semifinals, but they lost against the undefeated McEachern High 64-61. Norcross had won the previous two state titles.
