GAC Girls Defeat Blessed Trinity in AA State Soccer Championships

Greater Atlanta Christian triumphs over the Roswell school at Saturday's match.

Greater Atlanta Christian defeated Blessed Trinity 1-0 in the AA State Championship for girls soccer last Saturday, making it the first state title win in GAC girls soccer history. Playing on the Titans' turf in Roswell, the Lady Spartans scored early in the game. Freshman Danielle Marcano headed the ball on an assist from junior Kayla Puzas only six minutes in, according to a press release. Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth White helped defend her post so that the Titans remained scoreless. The AA win is the first state title in Lady Spartan history. Diamond DeShields to Play in U17 World Championship

The U17 team marks the third U.S. national team for the Norcross High basketball player.

Norcross High basketball player Diamond DeShields will be playing in the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship this summer, according to ESPN. The U17 team is the third U.S. National team for DeShields, a junior at Norcross. The offense guard also won gold medals with U.S. teams for the U19 world championship team in 2011 and the U18 Americas championship team in 2010. She's among the six "newcomers" whom USA Basketball named to the U17 squad Sunday, says the article. The 12-player team will be playing in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from Aug. 17-26. New Principal to Lead Berkeley Lake ES

The new leader was named to replace Dr. FA McLeod who is retiring at the end of the school year.

At its May meeting the Gwinnett County Board of Education announced that Berkeley Lake Elementary School will have a new principal for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year. Dr. Susan Bearce, currently principal at Cedar Hill Elementary School in Lawrenceville, will take over as principal at Berkeley Lake ES, which is part of the Duluth Cluster schools. She fills the position of retiring Principal Dr. FA McLeod. Dr Bearse has been the Cedar Hill ES principal since 2009, and was Assistant Principal at Chattahoochee Elementary from 2006-2009. She also served in the position of Assistant Principal at Norcross Elementary from 2002-2006 and taught third grade at Peachtree Elementary from 1997-2002. Students at Stripling Elementary School got a hands-on demonstration from people who drive for a living as part of Careers on Wheels day on Friday. Just days before the end of the school year, kids in kindergarten, first and second grades – as well as special needs students – got a first-hand account from police officers, firefighters, garbage collectors, utility workers, animal control and ice cream truck drivers. L.W. Merck, with Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement, said he has been in his job for 25 years. Nearly 10,000 GCPS Students to Graduate This Week

This year's graduating class is the largest ever in Gwinnett County.

Next week, 9,843 students are expected to graduate from Gwinnett County's 21 public high schools. This year's graduating class, described as the largest ever in a Gwinnett County Public Schools press release, was also an accomplished one according to CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks. “As a community, we can be proud of these students and what they have achieved during their academic careers," Wilbanks said in a released statement. "We are especially pleased with the number of Gwinnett graduates who earned their place among the country’s most prestigious academic ranks, including 10 National Merit Scholars (and there may be more), 15 National Achievement Scholars, and 26 Georgia Scholars. Full-tuition grants were awarded to 11 Gates …

Meadowcreek, Norcross Seniors Receive $10K Scholarships

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund recently announced that 30 Gwinnett County Public Schools students are the 2012 recipients of the organization’s Georgia Opportunities Scholarship.

The following scholarships were awarded to Norcross and Meadowcreek seniors, according to a series of press releases from Gwinnett County Public Schools. Hispanic Scholarship Fund scholarships The Hispanic Scholarship Fund recently announced that 30 Gwinnett County Public Schools students are the 2012 recipients of the organization’s Georgia Opportunities Scholarship. The 28 current seniors and two 2011 graduates represent nine of the district’s traditional high schools and a charter school. Norcross Elementary Presents 'Rumpelstiltskin, Private Eye'

The school's drama club will be performing the play Monday at Thrasher Park.

The school year may be almost over, but usually it doesn't end without a big bang. The drama club at Norcross Elementary School is heading to the Thrasher Park Amphitheatre this Monday, May 21, for its production of "Rumpelstiltskin, Private Eye." "This will be the students' first performance for an open audience," said Kathleen Allen, the school's PTA president. Featuring 17 second and third graders from the school’s FOCUS program, the play is more than just a twist on Rumpelstiltskin; it's a mash-up of multiple fairy tales. Rumpelstiltskin is still a miller in this story, but he's also a private investigator. His daughter is kidnapped by the greedy king because he thinks she can spin gold, so Rumpelstiltskin investigates the case to try …

GAC Advances to Soccer Semifinals

Both the girls and boys will head to the state AA semifinals this week.

After two successful wins in the quarterfinals this past weekend, Greater Atlanta Christian Schools' girls and boys varsity soccer teams are headed to the state AA semifinals. According to the GAC website, the boys team defeated North Oconee High School 2-1 on Friday, May 11, and the girls beat Dawson County High School 7-0 the following Saturday. While both games took place on their opponents' turf, the upcoming games will be on Spartan soil. The GAC boys will play Westminister High School at 7:30 p.m. this Tuesday, May 15, and the girls will play Buford High School at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Admission is $7. Video: Summerour Hosts International Week

The middle schoolers celebrated cultures from all around the world.

Students, parents, faculty and community members came out to Summerour Middle's third annual International Night, a celebration filled with the diversity present at the school. "Since we're such a multicultural school, we wanted to have an opportunity for our students to be able to display their cultures," said Assistant Principal Michelle Ransom. "We also wanted them to have the opportunity to express, celebrate and help us coordinate this program." The event, which was held Wednesday, May 9, was part of the Summerour's International Week. Classes decorated their doors for contests, assembled an artifacts display in the front of the school and had guest speakers.
