Young Mother Dog Saves An Entire Litter of Pups

Here is a heartwarming story that is sure to be an inspiration to moms everywhere - two-legged or four-legged.

By Elizabeth Hale

Meet a precious Momma dog named "Melody," her little girl, Serenity, and her foster baby, "Fontina."  Their story is very heartwarming, and an inspiration to moms everywhere - two-legged or four-legged.

Melody's story begins with her being in a rural shelter on a dirty concrete floor, pregnant and due any moment to go into labor.  Angels Among Us Pet Rescue pulled her as quickly as they could, trying to get her into a foster home before she gave birth.

The wonderful foster who took Melody in has fostered pups before but had never helped a mother dog give birth, so it was a nervous time for both, but they committed to getting Melody through it together! Immediately upon getting her, it became very obvious that Melody's pregnancy was "unusual"  They took her to the vet's office to be checked and that's when they realized she had only one little baby inside her body!

The vet said it was probably due to little Melody being extremely young herself and it being her first litter.  Once they got back home, it became pretty clear Melody's body was trying to go into labor, so the next day they went back to the vet's office and an emergency C-section had to be performed.  Weeks later, it was discovered that Melody's little body had been hit at some point by a vehicle and she had suffered tremendous damage to her hips and pelvis area!

Under emergency care, Melody became Mom to her one precious little bundle of joy named "Serenity"!  Had they waited much longer to do the C-section, little Serenity would have died inside her mom's womb - but all was well now that she was here, healthy and ready to go home with her Mom!

What they didn't know at the time is how precious Melody would once again be called on to become a "mom" once more!  Angels Rescue was contacted about an emergency situation - six tiny pups at a rural shelter were without a mom, and in dire straits to receive milk and nourishment!  While in the shelter, a terrific mama cat who had just given birth to her babies while there at the shelter actually "accepted" the six tiny pups and brought them into her family so they could have the natural nourishment of a mother's milk, but the shelter knew this feline mom had her own litter to feed and it would only be a matter of days or hours and a better solution would have to be found.

Angels got to the shelter, immediately said we'll not only take the puppies, we'll also take Mama Kitty and her babies, as well.  How could they not take her after her heroism of giving them life-sustaining milk until Angels could find a better solution!  Once the babies were on their way, a search began through the organization to find the "perfect" fit for the puppies - they decided to see how young Melody and her single baby would react to the litter of newborns....it was a risk, but they had to try to save these little lives!

On a late Saturday night, with puppies in a warm blanket and baby bottles brought along just in case, they arrived on the doorstep of Melody's foster mom....as everyone held their collective breaths, each little furry bundle was gently placed next to Melody's little body.  Within mere seconds of placing them all together, surrounding little Serenity and her Mom, it became a "love at first sight" moment for all of them!  Melody helped them find her waiting milk, licked and loved on them as though they were her own, and little Serenity instantly went from being an "only child" to having six more furry siblings to share Melody's milk and love with!

What a glorious moment for all of them....and for Angels! Since those days, all of the little black puppies, along with Serenity, have been adopted.....except the last little girl, "Fontina," who along with Mom Melody, is also looking for her forever home and family!

They both deserve the very best of homes and families to continue the story of love started on that late Saturday night.  Love, loyalty and compassionate bonds were permanently formed that night and a true miracle in the form of a very young mother made life so much better for seven little furry balls of fluff!  Now, it is her turn and Fontina's turn to be adopted! Melody is a Beagle mix girl who's around 1-1/2 years old and weighs 23 pounds.  Fontina is around 12 weeks old and is a Lab mix female who weighs around 9 lbs. now but will be close to 40 lbs. full-grown.

Melody is spayed, and Fontina will be spayed at 16 weeks, through Angels.  Melody is completely house-broken, and little Fontina is working hard to get her potty training completed.  Foster mom says she's a very quick learner and is doing well.  Melody is such a good dog in the home that she does not require being put into a crate.  Her foster, Kim, says little Melody is the most mellow, laid-back, sweet little dog she's ever had the blessing to foster in her home.  She also told us Melody loves everyone - adults and children - is a submissive girl who just wants to please her humans all the time.  A true sweetheart.

Little Fontina is a perfect pup - playful but not hyper at all.  Just a little furry bundle of joy!  Melody enjoys being out in the backyard and playing, but she equally likes to just sit and watch birds, squirrels and people go by.  She's a very easy-going young lady! The ideal home for Melody would be one with a fenced-in yard, a home with kids or other pets, but most of all, a home where her people will realize just how very special this little dog truly is.

She's been through so much in her young life, and has been the shining example of acceptance, love, compassion and in spite of all life has thrown at her, she remains a humble, sweet, loving little girl who deserves nothing short of the BEST home and family Angels can find for her!  Could that be you???  We hope so - she deserves everything good from now on in her life!
