NHS Relay for Life Rummage Sale Adds to Team Goal

Saturday's American Cancer Foundation fund-raiser was just one of the many ways the Blue Devils Relay for Life team is working to reach its goal.

The Blue Devils Relay for Life team has a lofty goal this year - to raise $80,000 for the American Cancer Society.

But it's a target the school's young team members take on with gusto. Through a number of fund-raising activities and events the team is chipping away at its ambitious goal.

Kendall Jennings, the student chair for the Relay for Life, said the team is already on its way to meeting its target.

"Our team is made up of 200 team members," explained Jennings, "and each member is committed to raising $200.00." The team has found some unique ways to raise funds and awareness for their cause.

"We've held 'pink-outs' (Relay for Life team members dress in pink and pass collection buckets to the crowd) at basketball and football games ,and that's been very successful," said the 11th grader.

Saturday's rummage sale included a "Relay Car Raffle." Hayes Automative has pledged $20,000 toward the purchase of a new car. Tickets are $5, and may be purchased anytime between now and May 4th when the drawing takes place - and "you don't have to be present to win," pointed out Doug Maloney, the school's faculty co-captain.

Maloney along with Amy Gallois are the faculty co-captains. Last year the rummage sale raised $360. This year the proceeds topped the $500.00 goal the team had set taking in $564.20 for the day, said Maloney.

Items not sold by the end of the sale were donated to .

The NHS Relay for Life team has raised over $5,400 toward their $80,000 goal and they've got plenty of other fund-raising ideas up their sleeves, some that have already brought them closer to their goal including a $3.00 buy out of 7th period in which students could attend a pep rally in place of their last class of the day by contributing three bucks. It brought in $5,000 said Maloney.

Along with a number of smaller fund-raisers, the team is raising money online. Donations can be made at www.gwinnettrelayforlife.org said Maloney.

And on April 20, a carnival at the school is planned, this year's fund-raiser will include a movie on the green.

The NHS Relay for Life team has its own page on the Relay for Life website, for more information on the school's team and fund-raising efforts click here.  You can follow the team's fund-raising efforts, donate, honor a loved one, or join up.

Relay for Life is a movement that began in 1985 by a Tacoma doctor who wanted to find a way to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Today there are local Relay for Life fund-raising activities across the country. In Gwinnett County the Relay for Life culminates with an over-night event on May 4, 2012, which will be held at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds in Lawrenceville.
