'Pulp Fashion' Exhibit Opens at The Hudgens

Four new exhibits including imaginative paper dresses and gowns at The Hudgens to be celebrated in June 9 reception.

The opening of four new exhibits at the Hudgens Center for the Arts in Duluth including “Altered Books” and “Pulp Fashion: The Art of the Paper Dress” will be celebrated at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 9.

Forty entries in the Gwinnett County Public Library’s Altered Book Contest and Pulp Fashion dresses featured at Duluth’s Barefoot in the Park Fine Arts Festival in May will be on display at the Hudgens starting Tuesday, June 5. The public is invited to the June 9 reception.

Winners of the Altered Book Contest will be announced during the reception and prizes awarded to first place entries in adult and student categories.

"Pulp Fashion" features wearable art fashioned from the pages of discarded books and magazines by staff teams from several branches of the library including the Duluth Branch. A popular exhibit last summer, this year’s exhibit includes 14 paper dresses and gowns. The imaginative creations, including accessories made out of paper, were modeled in a fashion show at Barefoot in the Park.

Also opening June 5 are “DRAWN: From Athens” and “Summer Sk8.” All four exhibits will remain on display through Aug. 25. There are several related programs and events scheduled in conjunction with the new exhibits.

“DRAWN” presents drawings by 15 Athens-based or Athens-schooled artists. The companion “Summer Sk8” exhibit features skateboard designs by Didi Dunphy.
