The Harlem Legends Visit GAC

A father-daughter event at Greater Atlanta Christian Schools gave dads a chance to use their moves on some former Globetrotters and pros--and to hear the Legends' message of positivity and hard work.

The Harlem Legends descended on Greater Atlanta Christian Schools Friday night to wow the crowd with their signature moves and on-court comedy show.

This year’s $25 event, sponsored by GAC volunteer organization LACE, was the Father-Daughter Basketball Extravaganza, which included GAC dads and staff hitting the court in a game against the Legends.

Derek Hays, who has two children that attend the school, has been a member of the GAC All-Star Team for two years. “It is a thrill to be able to play a game of basketball with the Harlem Legends, I am just going to try not to embarrass my children too badly,” he said.  Hays finished the game with eight points.

The Legends were founded by former Harlem Globetrotter Michael Douglas. The team consists of various professional players including former Harlem Globetrotters and former NBA and CBA players.

“I am so happy to be invited back to GACS for a second year by the ladies of LACE. I am looking forward to having fun with the kids and their parents during the game,” said Douglas.

Douglas has traveled to over 100 countries, entertaining crowds and sharing his positive message. In 1991, Douglas established the Michael Douglas Youth Foundation (MDYF) to help individuals and communities realize their optimal potential. He said his mission for the MDYF is to provide activities that are fun, educational and a model of healthy living.

“Luck only happens when preparation and opportunity meet,” Douglas said. He chose this message because he feels it is a true reflection of his own life. Douglas wants others to experience the same opportunities that he did as child with big dreams.

Together, The Harlem Legends and MDYF offer Celebrity Basketball shows, Shoot for the Stars Camps and Motivational Programs for schools, youth organizations, non-profits and the community as a whole.

The Harlem Legends will certainly tickle your funny bone.  They also managed to take time to answer few serious questions between autograph signings. When asked what he enjoyed most about what he does, Larry “Shorty” Coleman replied, “In my job, I have the privilege of working with some of the most talented women in the game of basketball, like Lannet Woodard.”

Woodard is one of the few female members of the Harlem Legends. “God gives us all equal opportunity and I would like to see woman have more opportunities open to them in the game of basketball,” he added.

Rachel Stiles, a fifth grade student at GACS was all smiles when I asked her if she was having a good time with her dad. Stiles said, “I am looking forward to the game. It is really funny.” Rick Stiles agreed with his daughter, saying, “I am definitely looking forward to the game tonight.”
