Report: Gwinnett Not Considered For Atlanta Braves New Stadium

County Chairwoman Charlotte Nash says the organization and county did not engage in dialogue about a possible relocation of the Major League Baseball franchise.

The Atlanta Braves shocked the region on Monday in announcing they would be relocating from their downtown home of nearly half a century to outside of the perimeter for the 2017 season.

But it doesn’t appear Gwinnett County was considered as a destination spot for a new stadium, which will be constructed on a 60-acre site in Cobb County at the northwest intersection of I-75 and I-285. The site will also contain parking, mixed-use development and green space in the area near the Galleria and Cumberland Mall.

County Chairwoman Charlotte Nash told the Gwinnett Daily Post on Tuesday that to her knowledge, “Gwinnett County was not approached by the Braves, nor did we approach the Braves.”

While there are many factors involved in the Braves' decision to leave Turner Field, including as the team explained a “lack of consistent mass transit options, inadequate number of parking spaces and limited access to major highways," one of the goals as team President John Schuerholz said, is to have a stadium that will “thrive with action and vitality 365 days a year, not just game days.”

The Gwinnett Braves, the organization’s Triple-A affiliate that moved to Lawrenceville from Virginia four years ago, may not need their fans to enjoy Coolray Field everyday of the year, but they do want fans to enjoy their visit to the ballpark to the utmost.
