Blue Devils Baseball Player to Commit to KSU

Norcross High junior Griffin Helms will verbally commit to Kennesaw State University on Monday, Feb. 4.

Griffin Helms of the Norcross Blue Devils baseball team will verbally commit to Kennesaw State University on Monday, Feb. 4, according to NHS head coach Jonathan Wyman.

The 5'10" 200-pound catcher is only a junior at Norcross High. He earned him varsity letter as a freshman scholar-athlete, according to the Norcross baseball website.

"Continuing your playing career beyond high school is a dream for many that is achieved by very few, let alone a current junior in high school," said Wyman. "Please join the Norcross Baseball family in congratulating Griffin on this prestigious honor."

Wyman explained that Kennesaw State is a Division I school that plays in the
Atlantic Sun Conference, a college athletic conference operating in the Southeast. The college's team, the Owls, have mounted an overall record of 1,054-605 in its 29 years of existence. They have made it to the Division II College World Series six times and the NCAA Regionals 11 times, according to Wyman. Last season, the Owls finished third in their conference, and they only lost five players due to graduation.

Kennesaw has had 49 student athletes sign professional contracts with major league teams, including 35 who were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft, continued Wyman. Six former Owls have played in the major leagues, with Willie Harris of the Cincinnati Reds and Chad Jenkins of the Toronto Blue Jays being the only two players in the majors as the 2013 season approaches.

The public is invited to Helms' verbal commitment at Norcross High School on Monday, Feb. 4.
