GAC Beats Decatur 69-31

The Spartans move to 6-0 with a convincing home win.

Greater Atlanta Christian was tested early by a feisty Decatur team, but were too much in the end, winning 69-31 at Reynolds Field Friday night.

Lavondre Nelson led the Spartans ground game, piling up 147 yards on 7 carries and helping GAC to a 6-0 start to the season. Decatur came out firing with quarterback Vito Antinozzi throwing a plethora of screen passes and moving the Bulldogs down the field. The score was 7-0 when Antinozz called his own number on a quarterback keeper and ran into the endzone from 15 yards out.

GAC answered right back after a nice kick return by junior Kyle Scales. Nelson softened up the defense with runs of 31 and 8 respectively before quarterback David McTier scored on a 19-yard QB keeper of his own.

Decatur scored the next 15 points of the game on touchdown passes to Alex Fowler and Terryon Robinson to put the Spartans at a 22-7 disadvantage. Quarterback Delano Spencer found Nelson on a well-executed wheel route for a 65-yard touchdown play.

The GAC offense came alive at this point and started to pound it inside with their stellar stable of backs. Nelson, Scales and DeSean Daniels all punished the Bulldogs on inside runs and eventually wore down Decatur's defense. That Spartans took the lead for good when Spencer found Scales on an out route, which Scales took to the house for a 63-yard score and a 28-25 lead for GAC.

The second half was all Spartans', starting with a Scales 71-yard kick return followed by the first of two 10-yard Spencer touchdown runs. The only second half highlight for the Bulldogs was an 85-yard kickoff return to make it a 48-31 game. The Spartans put all doubt to rest with a quick scoring drive. Nelson found a hole inside and tore off a 54-yard scamper to salt the game away.

The undefeated Spartans will host Clarkston for their Homecoming game next Friday at Reynolds Field. Game time is at 7:30
