Summerour Receives a Haul of Donated School Supplies

A chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority donated $200,000 worth of supplies to 12 locations, including the local middle school.

Boxes of glue sticks, pens, papers, notebooks and folders could be found at Summerour Middle School on Saturday. Sounds like a typical summer day in the wake of school starting up—except that these supplies were collected, sorted and bagged by a local sorority and donated to the school.

Upsilon Alpha Omega Graduate Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. supported the sorority's effort to donate the supplies. In total, the sorority purchased $200,000 worth of school goods, creating over 1,000 bags of donated items, according to a statement from the sorority.

The ladies completed the project during their Atlanta Leadership Seminar, held from July 13 to 17. Attorney Carolyn House Stewart, the international president of the Alpha Kappa Alpha, came up with the plan, asking the 4,000 who attended the seminar to bring supplies for donation, which was a national effort.

Locally, the supplies themselves were distributed around the metro area by 600 youth volunteers who were attending Best Friends Camp.

The bags went to 12 different metro Atlanta locations, including Summerour. Schools in Dekalb, Rockdale, Clayton, Cobb and Newton counties also received the generous donation—just in time for back-to-school shopping.
