In Gwinnett County Public Schools, parents may register their rising kindergarteners on May 2. Registration times may vary, so be sure to call the local school before arriving. (Click here for numbers to all elementary schools.)

Here's a quick rundown of what parents need to know:

1. What is the cutoff date for children to be elgible for kindergarten?

Children must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2013. This is a state law.

2. Who can register children?

Only parents and guardians can register children for kindergarten.

Where should parents register children?

Registration must take place at the school the child will attend. To learn which school that is, parents may call the district's planning department at 678-301-7085.

3. When is the first day of school?

The first day of school for the 2013-2014 school year is August 7, 2013.

4. What if parents do not have all the required documentation?

These parents (or guardians) will not be able to register children if all required documentation is not available at that time. Registration will be delayed.

5. What documents do parents need?

  • A birth certificate, or something else that shows proof of birth date
  • Proof of residency, which means a utility bill (no telephone bills) AND one of the following:
  • a non-contingent sales contract
  • current lease/rental agreement
  • most recent income tax return
  • current paycheck stub
  • current Medicaid card
  • current residential property tax statement or bill
  • current warranty or quick claim deed

  • Evidence of vision, hearing, and dental exams obtained in the past year
  • Photo identification
  • Proof of custody or guardianship
  • The child’s social security number (Schools are required to ask for this at the time of registration. However, children can be registered without it. In this case, parents will have to sign a waiver.)
  • Copy of pre-K progress report (Parents can bring this to the first day of school if they wish. It will serve as a benchmark for their child.)
