Norcross Student Nominated for Presidential Scholars Program

Many Gwinnett students, including Allison Fisher of Norcross High, have been picked as candidates for the prestigious academic honor. Winners will be flown to Washington, D.C., for a special ceremony at the White House.

Ten Gwinnett County students have recently been named as candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, one of the highest honors for high school students.

The application process is by invitation only. To be chosen as an academic candidate, high school seniors must score exceptionally well on either the SAT or the ACT, or be nominated.

For arts candidates, high school students must also demonstrate academic achievement and participate in the National YoungArts Foundation program, among other criteria.

Following their nomination, the students may formally apply for the Presidential Scholars Program. If chosen, winners are flown to Washington, D.C., in June and are honored at a special ceremony sponsored by the White House.

During their visit to Washington, scholars have access to national and international government officials, educators, authors, and others.

Semifinalists will be announced in April; finalists will be announced in May.

Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars.
