Elementary School Recreates City of Norcross in Kindergarten Project

Norcross Elementary transformed its kindergarten classrooms into a mock town so that the students could work as employees and shop at different stations based on actual businesses in Norcross.

Kindergartners at Norcross Elementary got a taste of the real world Wednesday when the school transformed its youngest students' classrooms and hallways into a mock town based on the city of Norcross.

The faculty organized the Kindergarten Math in Motion and Community project, which involved getting the kids to learn about money by working and shopping at different stations that represented real Norcross businesses.

The project, which kicked off this week, involves each child working for $2 worth of dimes each day and then spending it at various businesses.

While half the kindergartners were either buying ice cream, purchasing tickets to watch "The Jungle Book," getting their nails painted or spending their money at another station, the other half were servicing them as employees. After 30 minutes, the groups would switch roles.

Some of the different places the kids worked and shop at were Waffle House, Malibu Grand Prix's arcade, McDonald's and Lowe's, and representatives for some of the businesses came out to help the kids Wednesday, too.

The school even had students work as officers for the Norcross Police Department. The kindergarten officers were responsible for patrolling the streets and making sure everything was in order, and they would arrest their classmates and put them in jail if they broke the law. Inmates even had to pay 10 cents to post bail.

Norcross Police Officer Robert Wolfe and Capt. Brian Harr stopped by to say hi, help out and even do a bit of shopping, too.
