Mayor, Police Chief Visit Norcross Elementary for Read Across America

Last week, schools around the nation celebrated Read Across America, also known as Dr. Seuss Day.

Since the holiday originally fell on Saturday, many schools chose to partake in it Friday, March 1. Students and teachers dressed up as Dr. Seuss characters, styled their classrooms and doors after the author, and participated in reading activities.

Norcross Elementary School went all out with their Read Across America Day with more than 50 volunteers. Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson, Police Chief Warren Summers, former Mayor Lillian Webb and Gwinnett County School Board District V Chairwoman Louise Radloff were among the volunteers who visited the school to read to the kids.

"Reading opens up the world to you because it can tell you about a lot of places you may never be able to go and see and do," said Webb to a second grade class. She read Dr. Seuss' "Wacky Wednesday" to them.

Athletes from Clark Atlanta University and Solomon Brannan Jr., who played for the Kansas City Chiefs in the first Super Bowl, also took the time to read to the kids at Norcross. Other volunteers included employees from Wells Fargo, Associated Credit Union, Univision, V103, CBS Radio, and Barnes and Noble.
