Math Problems Leave Beaver Ridge Parents Outraged
Homework referred to beatings and slavery, which parents say is inappropriate.
Some Norcross area parents raised a red flag after their elementary aged children brought home math word problems with some troubling content, Channel 2 reports.
The problems referred to slavery and beatings, among other things. "Each tree had 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?" one problem read, according to the news report.
Another problem reportedly read: "If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?"
Two parents contacted the principal of to express their outrage--and also got in touch with the local news station. School officials say that the assignment was an attempt at "cross-ciricular" teaching, but one that was inappropriate because of the lack of historical context.
