Gwinnett Schools Announce Plan for Making Up Snow Days

Gwinnett students will have longer days to help make up for the 7 days missed due to inclement weather.

Gwinnett County Public Schools says it will add 30 minutes to each school day from March into May to make up for snow days in January and February.

The school system also will hold classes on the two remaining built-in make-up days. Gwinnett students have had seven snow days this so far this school year.

These changes have been made to the school calendar:

  • Use built-in make-up days on Feb. 17, March 14 and May 22.
  • To make up for the additional four days, the school day will be extended 30 minutes for 48 days from March 3 through May 14. Classes will be dismissed a half-hour later.

In a press release announcing the decision, the system said the plan was focused on maintaining 180 school days of instruction, have a positive impact on instruction rather than adding days to the end of the school year, and cause as little impact as possible on families, employees and  students, and on the graduation schedule.

“The addition of 30 minutes to the school day during March, April, and early May will allow us to make up the equivalent of four instructional days in what is the least disruptive manner possible, as students and teachers already will be at school,” Superintendeny CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks said in the press release. “The proposed plan is a logical, responsible one that we feel will best serve our students, teachers, and staff.”
