GIVE Center West Ready To Welcome Students

Some 250 students are expected to attend the new center when it opens Aug. 7.

On Thursday Gwinnett County Public School leaders showed off the new GIVE Center West facility located on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

A number of school board members were on hand including Superintendent Alvin Wilbanks, Louise Radloff, Dr. Mary Kay Murphy and Dr. Robert McClure.

The alternative school is expected to have an enrollment of 250 students when school starts back on Aug. 7, said Sloan Roach, spokesperson for the school system. The facility has a capacity for 480 students.

GIVE Center West is one of two facilities that was founded in 1994 as a program for students in grades 6 through 12 with severe discipline issues that prevented them from attending their home school.

The 30,000 square-foot building was formerly occupied by Sanyo TV and includes warehouse space.

In addition, 46 trailers have been set up on the property for student classrooms and other facilities. "The portable units will add more flexibility as student population fluctuates," said Danny Jardine, Chief Operating Officer as the reason classrooms were not built within the building itself. Each classroom is equipped with a security camera.

46 trailers include:

  • 30 standard classroom trailers
  • 4 science lab trailers
  • 4 toilet trailers
  • 8 admin/conference room/misc. trailers
  • 1 art room trailer
The main building has been remodeled and includes:
  • media center with computer lab
  • large multi-purpose area for student screening, eat-in meals, large meetings, PE curriculum
  • 4 computer labs
  • administration area
Superintendent Alvin Wilbanks said the new facility may very well become a "test case" as the school system considers opening other GIVE centers in the county modeled after this new facility.
