GCPS Fair to Assist Families of Special Needs Students

Gwinnett County families of students with special needs can learn more at an event this month about how to support their children as they get ready to transition from K-12 into adulthood.

The annual Gwinnett County Public Schools Transition Fair is scheduled for Saturday, March 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Peachtree Ridge High, 1555 Old Peachtree Road, in Suwanee.

This event is open to students from all school clusters.

The GCPS Transition Fair is designed for families of students with special needs to obtain information that will help them in the future. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with local agency representatives to discuss and research the various options available as they transition to post-school activities and employment.

Representatives from professional agencies and higher education organizations will join the GCPS educators. The event consists of the following sessions and activities:

9:30 a.m. -- Students can attend a special session with representatives from the program Empowering Our Youth. The panel will discuss self-awareness and self-advocacy for people with disabilities.

9:30 a.m. to 12:25 p.m. -- Participants can attend breakfast breakout sessions and learn about topics such as Medicaid waivers, navigating social security benefits, estate planning, guardianship options, vocational rehabilitation services, vocational and community programs, and more.

9 a.m. to 1 p.m. -- Participants may speak one-on-one with representatives from various agencies and organizations about employment support, residential services, day programs, recreation and leisure, and other resource organizations.
