Free Workshop for Struggling Students

Parent to Parent of Georgia is offering a free training class this Saturday to help students and their parents.

No one likes to see a child struggle in school.

That's why Parent to Parent of Georgia is hosting a free training class Saturday afternoon called "Seeing School Through Your Child's Eyes When School is Hard." The class, which will be held in Peachtree Corners, aims to help students jump over those hurdles and succeed in the classroom.

Jennifer Hasser, the executive director of Syllables Reading Center in Alpharetta, will be heading the event with a two-hour workshop and an experiential, hands-on simultation in the subject of reading.

To better understand the areas of decoding, comprehension, vocabulary and written expression, the class is designed for people to experience what it's like to be someone who may be a struggling learner, said Hasser.

Attendees will actually be able to feel what it's like to have reading disabilities such as dyslexia and dysgraphia and other issues like spelling and attention problems.

"It's not a lecture," assured Hasser. "I don't have to tell them how difficult it is. They get to feel it."

The main goal behind "Seeing School Through Your Child's Eyes" is to help parents and students, but it has a second purpose, too. Parent to Parent is also hosting the event to mark the end-journey of a struggling Gwinnett high schooler whom the organization had been helping.

After failing her freshman year twice, the student was able to get back on track through P2P's state-funded program called the Navigator 360 Project, said P2P Regional Coordinator Eleanor Mallory.

Each participant in the program is assigned a PATH (Planning Alternative Tomorrows With Hope), which helps address challenges and reach personal goals through mapping a plan made entirely of visual graphics, according to P2P Training Services Supervisor Karen Burns.

Even though not all PATHs are education-oriented, this Gwinnett student's goals were to graduate high school and pursue her education further. Saturday's event is to close the PATH chapter for the student, Mallory said, and the new PATH grad hopes to help others through the class.

The free workshop is open to the public and will take place Saturday, March 24, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. It will be held at the Simpsonwood United Methodist Church, located at 4500 Jones Bridge Circle in Peachtree Corners. Reservations are recommended. Call 770-451-5484, ext. 327, to reserve your spot.
