At Second Count, School Enrollment Numbers Down, As Expected

The second count represents an increase of 3,690 students since the school system's first count Aug. 9. Local schools are still down across the board.

Gwinnett County Public Schools announced an enrollment of 160,649 students in its second count conducted Monday, Aug. 15. This represents an increase of 3,690 students since the school system’s first count last Tuesday, Aug. 9.

The school system's “day-after-Labor Day” forecast is 162,459, according to Jorge Quintana, GCPS director of media relations. At this point, GCPS is 1,810 students below forecast.

However, last year, the school system grew 1,796 second from the second count until its final count, Quintana reported. Based on these preliminary numbers, GCPS planners expect the school system's post-Labor Day enrollment to be very close to the forecast, he said.

School system planners will continue to monitor growth over the next few weeks. The remaining enrollment counts will be conducted on Aug. 22, Aug. 29, and Sept. 6. Historically, enrollment continues to climb during the year, with the post-Labor Day count more accurately reflecting school enrollment.
