Soon a portion of Buford Highway will be getting not only some needed safety features but also a facelift by way of landscaped medians.
Through a grant provided by the Atlanta Regional Commission, 1.5 miles of Buford Highway stretching from Jimmy Carter Boulevard north to Beaver Ruin Road is scheduled for the improvements.
"The road is not being widened, we're adding a median for traffic and pedestrian safety," explained Jeff Mueller, Norcross' city engineer.
In addition to the medians, a right-turn-only lane will be added on N. Norcross-Tucker Road for north-bound traffic turning onto Buford Highway.
The new medians and turn lane were recommended projects by Atlanta Regional Commission and funded through Livable Centers Initiatives, a program that awards planning grants to local governments.
Mueller said the city began the process with a concept study in 2009 and hopes that construction can begin by January 2015. The Georgia Department of Transportation is currently working on obtaining rights of way for two parcels involved in the project.
