Norcross Reacts to Bin Laden’s Death

The news hit the Norcross streets, bringing joy and sadness to residents and workers.

For many in Norcross today, the news that the most wanted terrorist in the world, Osama bin Laden, was brought to justice came as bittersweet. Though there is an overall feeling of pride and joy, for some the news brings strong emotion and caution about retaliation.

“I would say I feel relieved and sad,” said Jeff Johnson, who works in Norcross, as he browsed the paper over a coffee this morning. “It brings 9/11 back for 3,000 families. I’m sure a lot of them are estatic.”

But for Johnson, the news also recalls the moment when he heard about the Twin Towers coming down, not a moment he’s happy to remember.

“So many of our lives have changed over in 10 years,” he said. “I don’t think it will go back. Terrorism is here to stay.”

For Christina Akhtar, this is definitely a win for the country, but it shouldn’t be an end point. “I hope this isn’t a reason for us to stop fighting terror,” she said. “I think I’m more caution than anything… Nothing’s over.”

She said she wished that we could have just captured him instead of killing bin Laden.  “But I’m no Navy Seal.”

Overall, Akhtar was deeply impressed by the skills of the Seals in getting in and getting the job done. “It makes my hairs stand up on end,” she said.

For Angie Blair, a visitor strolling the streets on downtown Norcross this morning, there’s also the obvious political implications. “I think it will help Obama,” she said. With her sister, Tiffany Blair chiming in: “I think it is definitely a win for the administration.”

“But I’m worried that this could have more effects on America,” said Angie, pointing to the chance of retaliation that she feels could be real.
