Norcross City Council Recap

Here's a rundown of what happened at last night's council meeting.

On a frigid night, the Mayor and Council had a relatively short meeting—but it wasn’t without its significant points. Here are the basics:

-Two Council Members and the Mayor were sworn in for another term. Mayor Bucky Johnson was elected to his third two-year term; Councilmember Charlie Riehm was elected to his fourth term in office. Councilmember Craig Newton, the only elected official who campaigned to keep his seat this year, was elected to his second two-year term in office.

-Councilmember Andrew Hixson was appointed Mayor Pro Tem for 2012. The Mayor Pro Tem helps run meetings in the Mayor’s absence and also serves on the Mayor’s behalf to represent the city.

-The new Norcross Chief of Police, Warren Summers, was sworn in. Summers introduced his wife and son—and expressed thanks for the new position.

-There was some discussion about the new city map, which does include a stretch of Interstate 85.  The discussion was spurred because the Council needed to adopt new Speed Zone Ordinances for the area annexed into the city on Jan. 1 (the speed limits remain, but now fall under Norcross jurisdiction). The Police Chief expressed his desire to adopt speed limits into law, including the limit on I-85, but hopes to allow Gwinnett County Police to keep working the I-85 stretch now in the city limits.

-The city adopted a new policy for Compensatory Time Off (Comp Time) for city employees. The comp time must now be used in the time it was earned.

Editor's Note: The original article stated that Charlie Riehm was sworn into his third term in office. It is actually his fourth. We apologize for the error.
