Norcross City Council Meeting Tonight: Water-Sewer System, Old Cotton Gin and More

Making a women's only bathroom near Thrasher Park and increasing the mayor and city council's pay are also on the agenda.

It may be April Fools' Day, but April 1 will be business as usual for the Norcross City Council.

Members of the council and the mayor will commence Monday for its April work session and city council meeting, at 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. The meetings will take place at Norcross City Hall, located at 65 Lawrenceville St.

A number of items are on the agenda, including:

The intergovernmental agreement between the city and Gwinnett County on the Norcross water-sewer system: The county has approved a proposal to purchase the city's water and wastewater system, and the final step to move forward with the agreement is for the city council to approve it. The item will be up for discussion and possibly a vote Monday.

The acquisition of the Old Cotton Gin: The proposal suggests that the city purchase the 125 Lawrenceville Street building for connectivity, parking expansion and future expansion for other things.

Annual compensation for mayor, city council: It was discussed in the policy work session in March that the compensation for the mayor and council should be raised. An increase hasn't happened in years, according to the council, and other metro cities are much higher in comparison. Currently, the Norcross mayor/mayor pro tem receive $6,900 and the council receives $5,400. The agenda says that Monday's motion is to table the item to the April policy work session, but it may be discussed in the March city council meeting.

Making a women's-only bathroom at the Norcross Depot: The item motions to award a contract that will go to converting the public restrooms at the Depot for women only. The project is expected to cost $35,000. As discussed in the policy work session, one of the major driving factors of this project is to have more bathroom stalls available for women since their line tends to be considerably longer during Thrasher Park events such as the summer concert series. There was some debate about turning the bathroom into a men and women's bathroom, but as discussed, there would need to be some add-ons and major renovations for that to happen.

The removal of West Peachtree Street from the Community Development Block Grant project: The item proposes that a new sidewalk on West Peachtree Street to be removed from the overall CDBG project, which was passed at the February council meeting. CDBG aims to complete a number of projects mentioned in the LCI study that was completed last year.

Also on the agenda are: the change in conditions of the rezoning case for the construction of new homes at 152 Thrasher Street; a lease agreement with Gwinnett for the fire museum on Lawrenceville Street; a budget amendment for various land surveys and appraisals; and an amendment to the community development fee schedule.
