The Gwinnett County commissioners acted Tuesday (February 19) to smooth the way for a couple of key transportation projects.
The board authorized the eventual condemnation of 17 properties along SR 20 (Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to Burnette Trail) and the SR 20 Bridge (Burnette Trail to James Burgess Road) projects. All are in District 1 territory.
Gwinnett Transportation Director Kim Conroy explained that the properties will be condemned in the county's name, and eventually will be relinquished back to the state. To facilitate this, the Georgia Department of Transportation will reimburse Gwinnett about $1.8 million for the transactions.
Conroy said bids should go out soon for the SR 20 project, with a completion date expected about 2016. The SR 20 Bridge project could take longer to complete, Conroy said.
Commissioners took action earlier in February on several transportation projects in the county.
In other action Tuesday, the commissioners:
- approved a deal with the Greater Lilburn Athletic Association for new scoreboards at Lions Club Park baseball and softball fields;
- approved a deal with the Norcross Youth Baseball and Softball Association for new scoreboards at Pinckneyville Park baseball and softball fields.
