New Laws Take Effect in City of Norcross Today

The annexation referendum and Sunday alcohol sales begin today.

Happy New Year, Norcross. Thousands of new residents are now in the city limits and stores in the incorporated area can now sell beer and wine on Sundays.

 Inquires at local gas stations and drug stores showed that most were not planning to sell beer and wine on Jan. 1, which happens to fall on a Sunday.  Some stated that they were not aware of the new law. 

Only those stores within the limits of Norcross are now cleared, so grocery stores, like , will still not be able to sell alcohol on Sunday. Gwinnett County has agreed to put the Sunday sale of alcohol on the March ballot, allowing residents in unincorporated areas to soon decide on the Sunday sales issue as well.

Residents of an area east of Buford Highway, roughly along Mitchell Road, decided to become a part of the City of Norcross in the November election, which expands the city borders as of today. The number of residents in that area could be more than 5,000, according to the most recent numbers provided.

, now 6.14 square miles, up from 4.2 square miles.
