Mayor Tapped for Transportation Committee

Bucky Johnson will be part of a 10-person committee to define projects for the possible one-cent regional sales tax to ease traffic woes.

Mayor Bucky Johnson was appointed to an executive committee that will try to define what's to come for a one-cent, 10-year regional sales tax to be used for transportation, a measure that will be put to a vote in 2012. "Our assignment is to take a look at the best projects to break the gridlock in the metro area," said Johnson in a release.

The Atlanta Regional Roundtable, part of the Transportation Investment Act, decided on the committee in their first meeting on Friday, Dec. 17.  The roundtable will attempt to define project criteria, so the Georgia Department of Transportation can create a "wish list" of transportation projects.

Johnson is one of three metro Atlanta mayors to be named to the committee.  He said in a release that he hopes to represent Gwinnett's best interests. "I look forward to working on projects that will give people transportation choices and improve the quality in the ten-county region," said Johnson.

Johnson said the committee will be at work on the issue—meeting with citizen groups, the Atlanta Regional Commission, the D.O.T. and others—until they present the final recommendations to the Roundtable in Oct. 2011.
