Gwinnett Village CID Awarded $35,000 Beautification Grant

The grant was part of the state-sponsored GATEway program.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced that the Gwinnett Village CID will receive $35,000 for a landscaping project at the intersection of Brook Hollow Parkway and Mitchell Road along I-85.

“These landscaping projects are improving more than just the overall aesthetic of Gwinnett Village,” said Chuck Warbington, executive director for Gwinnett Village CID in a released statement.  He says that the projects create a sense of pride and security in the area.

The CID will put the grant toward a $70,000 aesthetic upgrade on the east side of Brook Hollow, just next to I-85.  This project would be the extension of landscaping at the Jimmy Carter Boulevard, Indian Trail Road and Beaver Ruin exits of I-85. Gwinnettians who sit in traffic have had a fair share of time to mull over these upgrades.

The CID recently released their 2010 annual report, stating that a main goal is to leverage funding. Since 2006, the CID says it has attracted $27.5 million in outside investment. For every dollar a local business owner puts in to the CID, four dollars will be invested in the community, according to their calculations.

The program awarded $644,000 in total to 20 different local governments and civic organizations in Georgia, according to a release.

“It’s important for every city and county to present a warm, friendly and beautiful first impression. GATEways helps them do that,” said Georgia DOT Commissioner Vance C. Smith, Jr. in the statement.

There were 54 submissions to the 3-year-old program, with less than half awarded grant money. The winning projects were selected by a 12-person committee that included representatives from the Sierra Club, the Georgia Wildlife Federation and GDOT, among others.
