GDOT Awards Half Million in Grants for Local Sidewalk Projects

Pedestrian mobility improvements slated inside the city limits and along Buford Highway.

The Georgia Department of Transportation awarded a total of $500,000 in transportation enhancement grants to the City of Norcross and the Gwinnett Village CID. The money will be used on “pedestrian mobility” projects.

The CID was awarded $300,000 for Buford Highway pedestrian enhancements, while the City of Norcross was awarded $200,000 for sidewalk improvements inside the city limits, according to a CID release.

Officials from both groups have been working together with the common goal of improving connectivity in the area, creating streetscapes that beautify and improve safety for pedestrians.

“We are excited to have been chosen to receive this grant and to be moving forward with a project that is sorely needed along Buford Highway,” said Chuck Warbington, executive director for Gwinnett Village CID, in a statement.

He said that the need for choices has been emphasized for transportation in the area—and that these enhancements will offer that for the many pedestrians who walk along Buford Highway daily.

The City of Norcross plans to use the grant money to fill in any gaps in sidewalk access for pedestrians, “creating a contiguous, seamless network of streetscaped sidewalks in and around the community,” according to the release.

“Our vision is to make it possible for someone to walk easily and safely all the way from Jimmy Carter Boulevard over to Langford Parkway and never get off a sidewalk,” said Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson in the release.

The GDOT funds for the City of Norcross will be applied to areas along Buford Highway, tying into the CID project, as well as along W. Peachtree Street at Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Reps Miller Road at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.
