Former Norcross Mayor Supports Peachtree Corners Quest for Cityhood

Lillian Webb, a long time mayor and former Gwinnett Commission Chair, offers her endorsement of the city of Peachtree Corners.

In a surprise announcement Lillian Webb, a well known public figure in Gwinnett County and former Mayor of Norcross, has given her blessings on the community of Peachtree Corners' efforts to organize as a city.

This past August she had attended the community's first town hall meeting organized by the Peachtree Corners Yes campaign and spoke with Debbie Mason, one of the organizers, after the meeting expressing her hopes that community's referendum to organize as a city would pass.

"Lillian came to the town hall meeting and afterwards said to me 'I sure hope this works for you,'" said Mason.

"So I said to her, 'Could I get that in writing,'" recalled Mason. Webb promised, and true to her word, Webb delivered.

At a fundraising meeting for Lynette Howard last week, Webb who served as the Norcross mayor for 21 years and also was elected the first woman to fill the seat of the Gwinnett County Commission Chairman, handed Mason her written statement of endorcing the referendum.

Following is a three paragraph statement by Lillian Webb:

"The vote on November 8th, deciding whether or not Peachtree Corners will become a city is certainly important to all of the residents who will be affected by that vote. And while that vote does not directly affect those of us in the surrounding area, there are many of us who have followed the campaign for 'cityhood' with interest.

"I am one of those individuals and would just like to go on record as saying that I've sutudied the issues involved and have been in contact with a variety of persons and groups who have been part of this effort for Peachtree Corners and have made their case with the legislature, with neighborhood groups, and with homeowners on a door-to-door basis. Likewise, I've studied three of the cities that most recently wenth throught his process -- Sandy Springs, Dunwoody and Johns Creek -- and have looked at the issues they faced and the way those issues played out across the infancy of those three 'new cities.'

"My conclusion is that I fully support creating a separate city of Peachtree Corners and heartily endorse the efforts of those who have worked so hard to achieve that goal. I look forward to the community pride and ownership that 'city' status will give you and wish you all the best for a resounding "Yes" vote."
