Express Lane Work Focused on Overhead Signage

Lane closures and traffic pacing planned for this week.

As part of the conversion of the existing , the Georgia Department of Transportation will continue work to install more than 60 signs along the I-85 corridor next week.

Daytime and nighttime work is planned. Traffic pacing may occur between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m.

This week, as weather permits, one or two segments of the HOV or inside lanes along the median wall in both directions will be closed during the overnight hours. Northbound lane closures will take place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. and southbound closures will occur from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Up to three lanes could be closed after midnight.

Traffic will be paced one to three times as needed. Overnight lane closures may occur at the following locations:

  • Tuesday, June 7 - Along the median wall from Jimmy Carter Boulevard to Beaver Ruin Road and a second work zone on I-85 south from Jimmy Carter Boulevard to Chamblee Tucker Road. A third work zone will result in lane closures on I-85 north from Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road to mile marker 112.
  • Wednesday, June 8 - Along the median wall from Jimmy Carter Boulevard to Indian Trail Road and a second work zone on I-85 south from north of Old Peachtree to Boggs Road.
  • Thursday, June 9 - Along the median wall from Indian Trail Road to Jimmy Carter Boulevard and a second work zone on I-85 south from north of Old Peachtree Road to Boggs Road.
  • Friday, June 10 – The northbound HOV lane from Beaver Ruin to Boggs Road.
  • Saturday, June 11 – The southbound HOV lane from Old Peachtree Road to Boggs Road.

Daytime work is expected to take place in the following locations in the northbound lanes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the southbound lanes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

  • Tuesday, June 7 – I-85 HOV lane, north and southbound, from the Dawson Boulevard overpass to mile post 98, just south of Jimmy Carter Boulevard.
  • Wednesday, June 8 – I-85 southbound HOV lane from mile post 98 to the Dawson Boulevard overpass.
  • Thursday, June 9 – I-85 HOV lane north and southbound from Chamblee Tucker Road to I-285.

The I-85 Express Lanes Project includes installation of 16 miles of fiber and signage along Interstate Highway 85 between Chamblee Tucker Road and Old Peachtree Road and along State Route 316 between I-85 and Riverside Parkway.

When completed, registered transit buses, motorcycles, alternative fueled vehicles and vehicles with three or more passengers will be allowed to use the inside (left) HOT lane for free, while single and double occupant vehicles will be allowed to use the lane if they choose to pay a variably priced toll.
