City of Norcross Continues to Grow Diverse

The Asian population in the city limits more than doubled.

With droves of international markets and churches in the area, including a Latino church and Korean church in the historic downtown area, last week’s Norcross census numbers come as no surprise.

The data shows that an already diverse city is growing--and growing more diverse. The official City of Norcross 2010 population came in at 9,116, up from 8,410 people in 2000 Census.

In the last official census, 53.4 percent of people identified themselves as White alone. In 2010, the Census Bureau puts that number at 41 percent, with Latino coming in as a close second at 39 percent.

The Asian population in the city limits more than doubled. In 2000, 6 percent of the city’s population identified themselves as Asian, 513 people. By 2010, that figure swelled to 13 percent, with 1,167 people checking the box for Asian.

The most constant figure between the ten years was the Black or African American population. In 2000, 19 percent of people identified themselves as that race, while in 2010 20 percent did.

Many more people also listed themselves as an "Other Race Alone." In 2000, 1,294 people checked this box, while in 2010 1,960 people did. That is currently 21.5 percent of the population, up from 15 percent.

Following a trend in the south, the number of people who identify themselves as multiple races has also increased. In the city limits, 395 people said they are of two or more races. In 2000, just 305 people had this designation.
