2013 Legislative Session, Week 1: New Appointments

State Rep. Tom Rice re-appointed to chair the House Motor Vehicles Committee. Also, Rice will serve on the House Rules Committee which has the final say on legislation that makes it to the floor for a vote.

Greetings from the Capitol!

The 2013 Session of the Georgia General Assembly kicked off on Monday, Jan. 14, and this session will prove to be a pivotal one for the State of Georgia.

I am humbled to be the Representative from our great district and appreciate the opportunity to represent the people of Peachtree Corners, Berkeley Lake and parts of Norcross, Duluth and Johns Creek.

Monday was an important day for the State of Georgia as the House of Representatives re-elected, by an overwhelming majority, Speaker of the House David Ralston. I am thankful to continue to work with Speaker Ralston as I have over the last three years, and additionally, the House re-elected Rep. Jan Jones of Alpharetta as Speaker Pro-Tempore. I am very proud of the leadership of my good friend Rep. Jones and look forward to working with her this Session.

In the Senate, Lt. Governor Casey Cagle set the tone with his positive and powerful words for a productive and successful Session. Additionally, your state Senate elected my good friends Senator David Shafer to serve as President Pro Tempore and Senator Ronnie Chance to serve as Majority Leader.

Governor Nathan Deal has been leading Georgia with a steady hand. Governor Deal enjoys strong support from a majority of the Georgia General Assembly. Under Governor Deal's leadership, Georgia is prepared better than many other states to meet the challenges we face as our state leaders work to balance our state budget, improve our educational system, attract new jobs, and provide public safety in our communities.

I am honored by my appointment as Chairman of the House Motor Vehicles Committee. I look forward to working for the taxpayers of Georgia on the important legislation that will come before our Committee. The House Motor Vehicles Committee oversees matters relating to drivers licenses, teen driving and all related issues.

Additionally, I have been appointed to the powerful House Rules Committee that has the final say on legislation to come to the floor for a vote.  I am also a member of the House Ways and Means Committee that addresses all bills dealing with taxation.  Finally, I am glad to serve on the House Higher Education Appropriations Committee that addresses the budget needs of the University System of Georgia and the Technical Colleges.

I ask for your comments, suggestions and questions as we work together to develop an atmosphere that fosters job creation, is fiscally responsible, offers world-class educational opportunities for our children, addresses our transportation infrastructure challenges, offers world class healthcare for families, and protects the rights of every Georgian.  Email me at tqgrice@aol.com or call my office at 404-656-5912.

Thank you again for the honor to serve you in the Georgia House.
