Officer-Involved Shooting Results in Death in Norcross Area

An officer shot a man near Singleton Road and Jimmy Carter Boulevard.

Gwinnett County Police Officers were patrolling an area of unincorporated Norcross last night when they saw three suspicious males, according to a report. One of the men pulled out a gun and pointed it at the officer, resulting in an officer shooting him in the head. He later died as a result of his injuries.

Cpl. Jake Smith of the Gwinnett Police Department said the three officers patrolling the area were part of the Gangs Unit and that the area, near the corner of Singleton Road and Jimmy Carter Boulevard, is a hotbed for gang activity.

At around 9 p.m., the officers saw three men they described as suspicious walking down the center lane of Singleton Road. “The guys were milling around in the middle of the street in the dark,” said Smith. He said that pedestrian violation is enough to stop the men—and that gang investigators are usually looking for ways to start conversations with people.

When the officers turned around to approach the men, they found that two had walked away.

According to Smith, the third man, who has been identified as 20-year-old Darryl Fuller, took a handgun out of his waistband when the officers got out of their car. Fuller ran to the sidewalk directly across from the JSB apartments at Sarah Court then pointed his gun at the officer, according to police.

One officer fired one shot at him, which struck him in the head. Fuller was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, according to police.

Police continue to look for the two males who left the scene. The officer did not get a very good look at them, according to Smith, but they are described as young Hispanic males.
