UPDATE: Police Say Burglars Were Not Media Impersonators

Two men who toured a damaged home that was later burglarized were with ABC News.

UPDATED April 6 at 4 p.m.

The two men who toured a storm-damaged home in the Lilburn area that was later burglarized were indeed legitimate media representatives and not impersonators responsible for the crime.

Gwinnett Police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said the two men were part of an ABC News that was in the area Tuesday covering the aftermath of Monday's severe weather.

They have been ruled out as suspects and the case has been turned over to detectives, Smith said.

Earlier Wednesday, Gwinnett Police said they were looking for a connection between the crime and the men, who were allowed in the house after showing press credentials. However, the men did not have a camera and were not driving media vehicles.

Smith said the homeowner had suspected the men as being the culprits of the overnight burglary.

At that time, Smith said it was very possible that the men were legitimate media members, but that police were investigating whether they had played a role.

“It is possible that the people the victim suspects were actually media representatives and not responsible for the burglary,” Smith said via email around noon Wednesday.

Smith said the men and their vehicles — a black Chevrolet Avalanche and a gray van — matched the description of the ABC employees.

"We continue to urge disaster victims to use caution in dealing with strangers," Smith said in a press release around 4 p.m.
