Norcross Police Catch Five Car Burglary Suspects

With the help of community, the suspects were caught red-handed last night and the stolen goods were recovered.

A resident of Sunset Hills subdivision in downtown Norcross called the police late last night when he saw a suspicious group of men in the neighborhood. A second phone call came in from Longview, just down the street. The resident was still on the phone with the dispatcher, when officers rolled into the subdivision and gave chase to the suspects, according to the Norcross PD.

The men split into two groups but the officers were able to track them down with the help of the residents, who called in to report that people were running through their backyards, according to Cpt. Brian Harr.

The men had backpacks that were stuffed with stolen goods, mostly money and electronics, like GPS devices, he said. The incident happened around 1:45 a.m.

The result was the arrest of five men on about 30 charges, including some from other jurisdictions, according to Harr. “I can’t be impressed enough with the officers' responses,” said Harr. “It was a great job by our guys, and a great job by the community.”

In total, Norcross Police believe that between 10 and 12 cars were broken into. Most were entered through unlocked doors, it seems.

Longview Drive resident Connie Weathers didn’t even know her van had been broken into when Norcross Police officers knocked on her door to return her GPS. She was obviously impressed with the recovery time. “It is just amazing,” she said.

Her husband had been out to walk the dog, but had not seen that her doors were slightly ajar. She said she was surprised since she has a motion sensor on her garage and her dog usually alerts them of visitors. “They must’ve been quick to get in and out,” she said.

The suspects, four adults and one juvenile from DeKalb and Fulton counties, are now in the hands of the Gwinnett County, said Harr. The car they were driving, a 2007 Chevrolet pick-up, was also stolen.
