Norcross PD Earns National Certification in Child Passenger Safety

In order to educate local parents and increase child safety, the Norcross Police Department has become nationally certified in child passenger safety, according to the city of Norcross website.

Five members of the NPD recently completed the National Child Passenger Safety Technician Certification Course, a three-and-a-half day class offered by the University of Georgia Traffic Injury Prevention Institute.

"The purpose of the Child Passenger Safety Technician Certification course is to train technicians to educate parents with the safest way to have a child in the car," course instructor Andrew Turnage said in the article.

State law currently requires children under 8 to use a child safety seat or booster seat when riding in a car, but statistics indicate that four out of five car seats are used incorrectly. As a result, car crashes are still the leading killer of children 1 to 12 years of age in the U.S.

And car crashes are at a high right now in Norcross. At the Norcross City Council annual retreat in January, Norcross Police Chief Warren Summers said car accidents in the city have doubled over the last year, mainly because of the city's annexation of Jimmy Carter Boulevard.
