National Night Out Starts Nextdoor Program for Norcross

Norcross' NNO is encouraging citizens of the city to sign up for the private social network that helps residents connect with their neighborhoods.

Organizers of recently signed up for the Nextdoor website, a private social network that helps neighbors connect with one another.

NNO, the nationwide crime prevention event that will be celebrated locally Aug. 7 in Norcross' , has partnered with Nextdoor since they share the same goal: "to let criminals know that neighborhoods are organized and taking a stand against crime," according to a press release.

With the Nextdoor service, residents are able to connect with one another on neighborhood-oriented projects. Users can organize block parties, track down babysitters, plan for emergencies and flashlight walks, and more.

Through the free website, neighbors also can create private neighborhood websites where members can ask questions, get to know one another, and exchange local advice and recommendations.

"Many parts of Norcross have very good human networks, but we want to continue to foster those relationships and grow them to include those who may feel left out and want to be more involved," said Nanette Arceneaux, the communications handler for Norcross' NNO. "We want to bring new people into our volunteer networks, and we want to be there to help out our neighbors in times of need. We also want to celebrate the good times and our victories in life, large and small, with those in close proximity to us."

Additionally, potential users can sign up only if they're invited by a member already on Nextdoor.

"The nice thing about Nextdoor is that it is a semi-private service, limited to the people who live in the community, so postings are not being broadcast 'across the internet and the world,'" added Arceneaux.

"When neighbors connect, good things happen," said Nirav Tolia, CEO and Co-founder of Nextdoor, in a press release. "More specifically, neighbors who get to know each other, look out for each other."
