Off-Duty Police Officer Drowns in Lake Lanier Near Little Ridge Park

The Lawrenceville police officer reportedly was swimming alone and called out for help before going under late Thursday afternoon.

A 35-year-old man drowned in Lake Lanier near Little Ridge Park in east Forsyth on Thursday.

The body of off-duty Lawrenceville Police Officer Canon Callender was located in water about 10 feet deep and approximately 35 feet from the shore at 7 p.m.

Callender had been with the Lawrenceville Police Department for about four years.

He reportedly was swimming alone and called out for help before going under at around 5:35 p.m.

That lake is a death trap. There should be signs all around the lake warning: "If you go in you likely will not come out alive."

I don't get it.....how do so many drown??? It is just way too much.......something is verrry fishy.

It's normally too much alcohol or they don't know how to swim. Lived on this lake 25 years and it's a great place to enjoy but you must have some respect for the danger.

This happens at Lanier and Altoona all the time. It's not the lake, it is the people. These drownings are preventable, but not if people ignore the danger of swimming in any lake and refuse to wear a life jacket. Even a good swimmer can get in trouble. Stick to a pool with lifeguards if you want to swim without one. Prayers to this man's family.
