Man Dies in Suicide Jump From I-85 Bridge

The man jumped from the Center Way overpass in unincorporated Norcross.

A man committed suicide Monday night by jumping from the I-85 bridge in unincorporated Norcross, police say.

Around 11 p.m., a Gwinnett County Police officer saw a man sitting on the Center Way overpass above I-85 North, according to the police report.

The officer attempted to speak with the man, 38-year-old Lamonte A. Shaw of Peachtree Corners, but he jumped off the bridge before he could be stopped.

He struck the roadway, and on-scene medics later advised that Shaw had died.

While officers were at the scene, family members started arriving to look for Shaw. They told police that Shaw had left a suicide note at his Noble Forest Drive home and on Facebook that said he was going to jump off the Center Way bridge.

Both Shaw's wallet and phone were left on the bridge before he jumped so that he could be identified, says the report.

His truck also was located at a QuikTrip parking lot at Center Way and Brook Hollow Parkway.
