Man Arrested for Norcross Apartment Fire

Julius Macklin was charged with first-degree arson for allegedly attempting to start a fire in unincorporated Norcross on April 28.

A man was arrested and charged with first-degree arson around midnight Monday in connection to a Norcross-area apartment fire.

Gwinnett County Fire investigators apprehended 21-year-old Julius Macklin for an April 28 fire incident that occurred at , located on the 1800 block of Graves Road.

In May, investigators filed arson charges against Macklin because they believed he "intentionally tried to set fire to combustible materials with the intent to start a fire" in the apartment, according to a press release from Gwinnett Fire spokesman Capt. Eric Eberly. Macklin had previously resided at Arbor Mill.

Macklin has been booked in the Gwinnett County Detention Center. The first-degree arson charge is a felony that carries a penalty of one to 20 years behind bars, according to the release.

In the April incident, firefighters reponded to the 1:49 a.m. fire and found smoke damage to the kitchen area. The smoke failed to produce a fire prior to injuring anyone or causing significant damage to the unit, says the release.

"We are fortunate that the fire did not get out of control and that no one was injured or killed," said Eberly. "The timing of the incident was a big concern for firefighters in this instance, there were so many other families that live within that building that were sleeping, we are just so very lucky we got there when we did."
