Gwinnett Police Officers, Bystanders Fired Upon

Officers were investigating disturbance call at QT when shots flew around them, several bystanders.

Gwinnett Police arrested and charged a man with aggravated assault in connection with a May 24 incident at the  located at 3844 Satellite Boulevard in unincorporated Duluth in which three officers and five bystanders were fired upon.

Officers responded to a disturbance call at the QuikTrip about 11:40 p.m., according to Gwinnett Police Cpl. Jake Smith. They were investigating the disturbance when seven shots rang out and bullets flew around the officers and several bystanders. No one was injured, Smith said. Several other officers responded to the area in an attempt to locate the shooter, but no suspects were located at that time, Smith reported. The initial disturbance call was not related to the fired shots, he said.

The dash camera on the primary officer’s vehicle revealed two subjects, one of whom was Fredrick Huse, 34, according to Smith. Huse and another adult male entered the QuikTrip separately and then left together a few minutes later. They did not have any kind of encounter or confrontation with the officers, Smith said.

The suspects crossed Satellite Boulevard and were observed at the entrance to Saratoga Springs Apartments. As the suspects were about to enter Saratoga Springs, one of them turned around and made taunting gestures towards the officers, Smith reported. The officers could not hear what was said, and were addressing the initial call, so they ignored the suspects. A few minutes later, the shots were fired from the area the suspects were last seen, he said.

The investigation following the incident led to the arrest of Huse, according to Smith, after a handgun and a stolen shotgun were recovered from Huse’s residence. Huse has been charged with aggravated assault and is in custody at the Gwinnett County Detention Center, Smith said. The second person seen with Huse on the video has not been charged, he said.
