Former PIO for Gwinnett PD Arrested for Soliciting a Prostitute

Former Gwinnett County public information officer Cpl. Brian Kelly resigned after it was learned he was arrested in Barrow County on May 31 and charged with pandering.

Gwinnett County Police Department announced that Cpl. Brian Kelly, former public information offficer for the department, resigned after it was learned that he was arrested in Barrow County on May 31 for pandering (soliciting an act of prostitution).

In a press release, Gwinnett PD spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith it was determined that Kelly did not tell Barrow authorities that he was an officer nor did he report his arrest to the department.

"Officers in this agency are required by policy to immediately report an arrest to their supervisors," Smith said in the release. "As a result of Kelly’s failure to report his arrest to this department, he was served with a letter of intent to terminate his employment. Kelly resigned in lieu of termination this afternoon [June 12, 2012]."

Smith said Kelly was a PIO for Gwinnett PD for about two years, ending in late 2010. He had been employed by the department since 2003.

According to WSB TV Channel 2, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said Kelly's arrest was part of a sting operation in conjunction with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. An undercover deputy reportedly posed as a prostitute in an ad on Backpage.com. He then arranged a meeting with Kelly at the Winder Best Western. Kelly had reportedly made the agreement and exchanged money before being arrested.
