Five-Year-Old Found with Marijuana in Book Bag, Mother Arrested

La Petite Academy student caught with drug in her book bag on the way to school.

A 5-year-old child, who attends La Petite Academy on Indian Trail Road in unincorporated Norcross, was found Monday with marijuana in her school book bag.

According to a report, the bus driver reported noticing "smelling something funny" on the child's clothing on the morning ride to school. When the driver told the child she smelled funny, she pulled a bag of marijuana from her book bag and told the bus driver that her mommy put it there. The bag contained 10 small baggies of marijuana totaling 19 grams.

Narcotics investigators were called to the school and the child's mother, Taneisha Lewis, 23, was contacted. Police searched the woman's vehicle and residence but did not locate any additional illegal drugs.

But police noticed that there was little evidence that Lewis and her daughter lived at the address, 1508 Hunters Club Ln., Norcross, which she had provided.

The following day police discovered that Lewis had provided a different home address, 2110 Preston Park Dr., Duluth, during a recent stop for a traffic violation. After an investigation, police found this was the home of her brother, Earnest Boyd, 26.

Both Lewis and her brother posted bond and were released from the Gwinnett County Detention Center. DFCS has been notified, the child is currently staying with family.
