Boy in Critical Condition After Nearly Drowning

A 23-month-old boy remained hospitalized Monday after nearly drowning Sunday evening in a swimming pool at the club house of the Menlo Creek Apartments in Duluth.

Gwinnett Police responded to scene at at 4370 Satellite Blvd. around 8 p.m. The boy, Jaiden Carnes of Marietta, had been removed from the pool. He was lying on the ground unconscious and unresponsive, and a police officer was performing CPR, according to the police report.

Susana Ramirez, 15, who was playing in the pool, spotted the boy floating in the water and called for help. Her father Rodrigo Ramirez picked the boy up and carried him to the side of the pool.

The boy’s father, Brian Carnes, and Andrea Reed, a woman at the pool who heard the calls for help, started administering CPR right after the boy was removed from the pool and before police and paramedics arrived. The child was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth by paramedics.

Carnes told police that he had been grilling and talking to friends, and Jaiden had been standing beside him. Jaiden’s mother, Causia Cruz, said she was not at the pool but arrived shortly after the incident.

The boy was transferred to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston where he was reported in critical condition Monday.
