Body of Missing Swimmer Located

The body of the man believed drowned at Buford Lake Park at Lake Lanier Saturday was located early Monday morning.

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services located the body of aΒ Β just after 8 a.m. Monday in the area it was originally thought he may have entered the water.

According to a press release, rescuers returned early Monday morning to resume the search and quickly located the man's body floating on top of the water. It has been turned over to the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner for further evaluation and to determine the official cause of death.

GCFES began looking for the missing swimming after being called to Buford Dam Park at about 8 p.m. Saturday night. Friends said they had last seen the man wading in the water at about 6 p.m. He reportedly couldn't swim and was not wearing a life jacket. Extensive searches by several agencies, including dive teams, Saturday night and Sunday were unsuccessful in locating the victim. The missing swimmer is reported to have been with a church group when he went missing in the water. Friends reported it after realizing nobody had seen him for about two hours.Β

The park had been closed Monday pending location of the body. GCFRS public information officer Lt. Eric Eberly said he's not sure at this point when the park will be open -- that would be a decision for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
