5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Felt in Norcross

Georgia science museum captures seismographic photos.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake has hit 41 miles outside of Richmond, Virginia, according to Julian C. Gray, curator at the Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville, Ga. People in Gwinnett, including in Norcross, say they did feel the quake on social media.

Southern States Insurance company wrote on Twitter: "It felt like someone was shoving our Norcross office back and forth!" Ryan McIver and Kevin Wade also reported feeling the quake in Norcross, among many others.

"A magnitude 5.9 is huge and very rare in these intercontinental locations where there are no know major faults, but they do occasionally happen," said Gray in an emailed message. The earthquake was recorded by the Tellus Seismograph (see photo) at 1:51 p.m., with waves arriving at the center two minutes later, according to the note.
