We Loved the Burrito & the Gorditas at Jalisco Taqueria #3 (Buford Hwy. & Langford Rd.)

For a great introduction into fresh authentic Mexican food, try one of the little taquerias in these Latin grocery stores around town. They are inexpensive and very fresh.

I love purchasing produce, meats, dairy products and dry goods from this small grocery store around the corner from my home. It is always clean and their products are very fresh and reasonable priced. They have an excellent selection of Latino ingredients from Mexican to Peruvian.

Every time I go in, I think I need to eat at the tiny little taqueria inside this store. Today I did just that.

The two ladies who run the taqueria are bilingual and very helpful in describing the menu items. We ordered a beef burrito and two gorditas al pastor.

Why we ordered so much food for two is beyond me. We were rolling out the door after we couldn’t help but eat every bite. The burrito had a slather of refried beans, flat top grilled skirt steak, melted white cheese, shredded lettuce, chopped cilantro and smashed avocado on a toasted flour tortilla. I think we inhaled it in 2 minutes.

Our next items were two gorditas al pastor. These are very similar to the Venezuelan arepas only these ladies used precooked yellow corn meal (Masarepa) instead of the typical precooked white corn meal that the Venezuelans and the Columbians use. Here they just sliced it in two and served it like a sandwich whereas the Venezuelans and the Columbians stuff it like a pita pocket. Al pastor is a pork butt that has been marinated in Latin spices including dried chiles then slow cooked until it falls apart, similar to the way we cook a pork butt in the oven. This gorditas al pastor had the marinated pork, shredded lettuce, cilantro, cojita cheese (similar to Parmesan or feta) and avocado slices.

The two ladies then brought out 3 different types of homemade hot sauce - hot, medium and mild. We used all three on both the burrito and the gorditas and decided we liked the hot one which is the red sauce the best.

Since this taqueria is so tiny (four tables) all the drinks were available for sale in the grocery part of this store and boy did they have a huge selection of all kinds of sodas, juices, and water. While we waited for our food to be prepared we purchased our drinks from the grocery part of the store but paid for the food in the taqueria.

The food was very fresh, authentic, very inexpensive and took very little time to prepare. We will definitely be back! I love having a tiny little taqueria in my backyard.
